Each country has its own laws regarding gambling whether it’s online or offline. It’s important for each player to know what is legal and what is not. On this page, I give you an overview of the most important things you should know and accordingly you can find out more about specific countries. At this moment I only discuss countries where English is the main language.
Gambling regulation
The first thing is to know if gambling is legal, and if so, which types of gambling. Because some countries (or jurisdictions for example the USA different per state) distinguish between different gambling products. So sometimes betting on sports is legal but playing casino games is not. And some countries consider poker a game of chance while others a game of skill.
In general, we distinguish three kinds of countries:
- Regulated countries aka ‘white markets’: countries that have regulated some or all forms of offline and online gambling. Operators that are allowed to offer their services in these countries are required to hold a license from the local gaming authority. Examples of regulated countries are the UK, Netherlands, Sweden and Spain.
- Not regulated countries aka ‘grey markets’: countries that have not (yet) regulated their online and/or offline gambling. Generally, residents from these countries can play at online casinos and sportsbook sites that have a license from another country such as Malta or Curacao. Examples of grey market countries are Canada, India, New Zealand and Australia.
- Forbidden countries aka ‘black markets´: these countries don’t allow any type of gambling. This is generally the case for Muslim countries.
